Why Would My Kid Need Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are one of the most effective to protect a child’s teeth from cavities. Sealants consist of a thin layer of resin that’s applied directly to your child’s teeth. This resin is liquid at first, but hardens when exposed to UV light. This creates a “seal” over your child’s tooth, hence the name.

This seal helps prevent food particles, acid, and bacteria from contacting the enamel directly. In turn, this reduces their risk of tooth decay. Dental sealants are an effective method of cavity prevention in kids of all ages, so almost any child can benefit from treatment. Care That Won’t Break The Bank

The Dental Sealant Treatment Process

Tooth preparation

To begin the process, we’ll clean your little one’s teeth. Then, our team will dry their tooth and apply a special etching solution to roughen the area slightly. This ensures a good hold for their sealants.

Sealant application

Once the tooth is dry and prepared, Dr. Prieve will apply the sealant resin. He’ll paint this liquid onto the tooth, sealing all the tiny cracks, pits, and crevices that are prone to decay.

Activating the sealant

After the resin is in place, Dr. Prieve will use a UV light to activate and harden the sealant resin. The entire process takes only a few minutes, and he’ll repeat it for each tooth that requires treatment.

Are Sealants Just For Back Teeth?

plus icon

No. Sealants are commonly recommended for back teeth, since they're larger and have deep grooves and pits that can make them more cavity-prone. Most kids get sealants around the age of six when they get their first adult molars, then again at age 12-13 when they get their second set of adult molars.

However, sealants can be applied to other teeth, too. This may be necessary if your child has weak enamel or is very cavity-prone. For more information, we recommend scheduling a consultation with Dr. Prieve at Blue Skies Pediatric Dentistry.
