Why Does My Child Need A Dental Filling?

Your child may need a dental filling if they have a deep cavity that can’t be treated with an alternative like silver diamine fluoride (SDF), Cavities are the most common oral health issue in kids and adults of all ages. If they're left untreated, they can cause further complications like tooth infections.

In the filling process, Dr. Steve will remove any decayed enamel, and then replace this tooth structure with composite dental filling. We use tooth-colored fillings at our office, since they look and feel just like your child’s natural tooth.

Preparing Your Child For A Dental Filling

Use positive language

Try to maintain a positive attitude about your child’s visit. Avoid using negative language like “shot” or “hurt.” If your child is curious about what will happen during the procedure, Dr. Steve can explain it to them in simple, child-friendly terms.

Keep them comfortable

We recommend bringing some toys, blankets, and other comfort items from home. This can help your child feel more comfortable while they wait for their treatment and during their appointment, too.

Consider dental sedation

Sedation can be useful for kids who are really nervous about their upcoming procedure. At Blues Skies Pediatric Dentistry, we usually recommend laughing gas (nitrous oxide) sedation for kids who are nervous about getting a filling.

The Dental Filling Treatment Process

Tooth prep and trimming

To begin the process, Dr. Steve will clean your child’s tooth and numb the treatment area. Then, once your child’s mouth is numb, he will gently remove any decayed tooth structure with a dental drill, while leaving their healthy tooth structure in place.

Placing their dental filling

Once he has removed all of the decay from your little one’s tooth, Dr. Steve will select a tooth-colored composite material that matches the color of their tooth perfectly. Then, he will apply the composite to the cavity and use it to rebuild your child’s tooth.

Final filling adjustment

After the overall shape of their filling is right, Dr. Steve will have your child bite down on a special piece of paper so that he can make sure their filling fits in with the rest of the teeth. After making any necessary adjustments and a final polishing, Dr. Steve will send your child home to enjoy their newly-restored tooth.
